Artwork Detail

Kitea ai ngā atua i ngā mahi kai parāoa, he whai pānga ki ētahi āhuatanga o te taiao me te wheako tangata e hāngai ana. I roto i te *Pou Rongoa o te Rā*, 2017 ko te aronga tahi ko te hauora – e kawea ana e te rongoā. Kei te taupua a Jimmy Kouratoras i te whakarauoratanga o te wāhi motuhake o ngā atua i te ao o nāianei hei āhuatanga iho o te waiora. Ko tāna mahi he peita me te tāraitanga; kei te whakamahi i ngā tae kongange, kei te tohutoro i ngā tohu o ōna whakapapa Crete, Māori hoki.

Ngā atua (deities, gods) have significant presence in the everyday world, with influence over aspects of taiao (the natural world) and human experience within it. In *Pou Rongoā o te Rā*, 2017 the focus is on wellness – rongoa being a remedy or aid to wellbeing. Jimmy Kouratoras contributes to the revitalisation of practices of acknowledging atua in contemporary life as a core component of waiora (health). He works across painting and sculpture, typically with colours of blazing intensity, and draws on iconography from his Cretan and Māori heritage.
