Originally from Onehunga, Jimmy James Kouratoras is an Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland-based artist with a career in film, painting and sculpture.
His practice began when working as an artist for hire in the film and TV industries. From this, Kouratoras has an extensive knowledge of paint and sculptural media, skilled in painting from reference, rendering textures and environmental set design. Since 2010, Kouratoras has told his own stories through art, merging subjects of Māori and Cretan heritage and pop culture to reflect his indigenous connections and ancestral knowledge.
