Monsters and Maidens

Monsters and Maidens

Exhibition Details

In the 18th century the monstrous is often incorporated in an exaggerated treatment of the human form in terms of scale and musculature, reworking Renaissance notions of the ideal. While heroes rescue women from grotesque animals or savage men, women themselves become monstrous when they step outside the constraints of femininity.

This collection show explores the powerful elements of fantasy and exaggeration of the 18th century Romantic movement.
