12—1.15pm

event Details

Join Nigel Borell (Curator Māori Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki) and Megan Tamati-Quennell  (Curator, Modern & contemporary Māori & Indigenous art, Te Papa | Indigenous Curator, Contemporary Art | Kairauhī Taketake Toi Onāianei, Govett Brewster Art Gallery) in conversation, as they discuss Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art.

Nigel and Megan will discuss the development and curation of Toi Tū Toi Ora and its significance as a Gallery-wide exhibition.  The conversation will range across ideas related to the curatorial premise of the exhibition, some of its conceptual underpinnings, and will include an exploration of what it means to fill the entire gallery with modern and contemporary Māori art from over 100 artists.  Nigel and Megan will highlight some of the curatorial choices made, the successes from Nigel's perspective, what he hoped to achieve with the project, and the impacts that he believes the exhibition will bring.  The conversation will also provide insight into Nigel's broader curatorial philosophies, his personal and professional projects, and his relationship with Māori art.

This event is part of the Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art | Opening Weekend Festival. Check it out to see what else is happening, as we kick off the largest exhibition in the Gallery's 132-year history.
