Tickets are limited to two per Gallery Member. Your ticket gives access to the entire programme on your day of choice, however, all activities have limited capacity – first come, first served.

Lecture: The Treachery of New Zealand ‘History Painting’ by Jane Davidson-Ladd

History painting is one of art history’s most misunderstood terms, often taken to mean the literal depiction of history. In this talk Jane Davidson-Ladd will explore three of the Gallery’s most famous New Zealand history paintings, and how their (mis)interpretations distort our understanding of history.
Dr Jane Davidson-Ladd is Curator of Historical New Zealand Art at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Passionate about New Zealand’s art of the long 19th-century, Jane wants to challenge the orthodox modernist view of it, to acknowledge the complex bicultural and transnational world colonial artists operated in, and the entangled histories that resulted.
