Hei konei mai: We'll meet again

event Details

Our stories, people and places are the focus of the final collection exhibition in the Grey and Mackelvie galleries. The much anticipated redevelopment and expansion of the Gallery provides the occasion to say hei konei mai - goodbye for now - to long-time admired and favourite works from the historic, modern and contemporary New Zealand art collections... until we meet again in early 2009.

The Mackelvie gallery gives prominence to colonial New Zealand art including landscapes, portraits of Maori and Pakeha ancestors and works recording early settlement, along with photography and prints. These works are treasures both great and small from the historic collection.

Highlights from the modern and contemporary collections make an impression in the Grey Gallery. Recent icons and visual touch stones expand on and create new art histories revealing a capacity to tell stories about who we are and our influences. Perhaps, we live on through our stories, because we are living out our history.

A selection of artists in the Mackelvie gallery include: Charles Blomfield, Jacques Carabain, Charles Goldie, Eugene von Gerard, Gottfried Lindauer, Albin Martin, Alfred Sharpe, Louis John Steele, Kennett Watkins, Walter Wright, William Hodges, Louis de Sainson, Joseph Merrett and others.

Modern and contemporary artists in the Grey gallery include: Colin McCahon, Rita Angus, Tony Fomison, Dick Frizzell, Louise Henderson, Ralph Hotere, Milan Mrkusich, Peter Peryer, Peter Siddell, William Sutton, Arnold Wilson, Fiona Pardington, Pat Hanly, Shane Cotton and others.
