Art Lovers’ Film presents The Price of Everything (2018), a funny, insightful and at times jaw-dropping documentary about the current contemporary art market, from artists to art dealers and collectors to critics. This film will be introduced by Auckland Art Fair co-director Stephanie Post, and tickets include a glass of wine. Art Lovers’ Film is a partnership between Auckland Art Gallery Membership and Rialto Cinemas.
About the film
‘There are a lot of people that know the price of everything and the value of nothing.’ – philanthropist and art collector Stefan Edlis
Exploring the labyrinth of the contemporary art world, The Price of Everything examines the role of art and artistic passion in today’s money-driven, consumer-based society. Featuring collectors, dealers, auctioneers and a rich range of artists, from current market darlings Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter and Njideka Akunyili Crosby, to one-time art star Larry Poons, the film exposes deep contradictions as it holds a mirror up to contemporary values and times, coaxing out the dynamics at play in pricing the priceless.
‘Brilliant and captivating documentary about how the art world got converted into a money market.’ – Variety
‘While this colorful and inquisitive cinematic essay on the state of the art world is occasionally sceptical and consistently thoughtful, cynicism isn’t really on its agenda.’ – NY Times
