Peter Nicholls
New Land III

Artwork Detail
During the 1970s, Peter Nicholls’s work featured regularly in surveys of sculpture practice within the region. In the earthbound sculpture of the New Land series he explored the basic forms of agriculture. New Land III contrasts the chiselled totara beams with taut wire and a steel hinge support. The sculptural outline offers a three-dimensional landscape of both natural and industrial intervention. For this work’s original exhibition, Nicholls wrote about his interest in ‘energy forces utilising the
tensile qualities of steel anchored to the warmth and stability of wood’.
