Yona Lee, Airport Lounge In Transit

Yona Lee, Airport Lounge In Transit by Yona Lee

Artwork Detail

Lee’s signature use of welded and refined stainless steel tubing is developed here to create an elaborate linear structure that encases objects of everyday urban and domestic spaces.

In this work, Lee allows the uncanny and the natural humour of her work to command a greater role, giving this piece many moods for our public – from poetry to wit, to surprise and opportunity for physical encounter. The incorporation of stanchions used by the Gallery and the attachment of cleaning tools creates an intimate entanglement between seemingly opposed objects and spaces. The work is conceptualised as a single sculptural element, as Lee intricately bends industrial steel tubing through the furnishings and objects of the everyday public space; the convex mirror, the lamppost, the airport bench; forging a relationship between the two to confuse and contrast the language of public space.
