Artwork Detail
Lyrically swooping and fanning across the gallery wall in constellations of woven and loose fibres the necklace adornments in Taonga o Te Ariki, 2017 call attention to the gradations of texture and tone of harakeke, pīngao and kiekie and the intricacy of raranga (weaving) as an enduring art form and cultural expression. Tangimoe Clay envisages the practice of raranga as a conduit for enacting and communicating the histories of adornment and its significance in tikanga (custom), retaining nga taonga tuku iho (treasures handed down) for future generations.
