Artwork Detail

I ngā tau tīmatanga o ngā tekautau 1970, ka noho a Kataraina Mataira rātou ko tōna whānau i Fiji. I whakaotia e ia ēnei toi peita e rua whai muri ake i te uhunga o Ratu (Ariki o Fiji) Tā Edward Tuivanuavou Tugi Cakobau. Kitea ai te whakarere mōrukaruka, te auhi, te rapu mae. Ko tā ngā matauri tūrehurehu he arotahi ki ngā tikanga o te tangihanga, ki te hauora, ki te oranga o te hunga ora.

In the early 1970s Katarina Mataira was living with her family in Fiji. She completed these two paintings after she attended the funeral of Ratu (Fijian Chief) Sir Edward Tuivanuavou Tugi Cakobau. They depict the bereft in a time of great loss, grief, and solace. Their abstract silhouettes draw attention to mourning practices and rituals for the health and wellbeing of the living.
