Artwork Detail

Ko te kōwhaiwhai he kaupapa nui o te peita a Sandy Adsett i ngā tau e 60 neke atu. Kua whakauruhia e te ringa toi tētahi taumata kōwhaiwhai e kitea ai ngā tae i ngā whakaritenga rētō, kongange hoki, he mea raweke i te wāhi tōrunga, i te wāhi tōraro mā te whakamahi i te tae me te tāhina ki te whakaatu i te tauira me te hoahoa. Nō tana raupapatanga o te tau 1988 ēnei peita e rua, he toi e whakaatu ai i te hoahoa auau e whakamahi ana i te hōputu matapihi tapawhā hāngai hei hanganga, hei aratohu hoki. He kārangaranga ki te toi o te matapihi nui i te South Atrium o te Whare Whakairi Toi, he mahi anō nā Adsett, he mea e whakaatu ai i ngā mātāpono hoahoa, tauira auau ōrite, he mea e miramira ai i tētahi o ngā tikanga matua o te kōwhaiwhai.

Customary kōwhaiwhai (rafter painting) has been the inspiration for Sandy Adsett’s painting practice for more than 60 years. The artist’s own form of kōwhaiwhai scholarship has incorporated colour in vibrant and rich arrangements which play with positive and negative space using colour and tone to distinguish pattern and design. The two paintings you see here come from a 1988 series in which Adsett looked at repeat pattern using this rectangular window format as a structure and guide. They neatly echo the large glass window work in the Gallery’s South Atrium, also by Adsett, which demonstrates the same principles of design and repeat pattern, thus highlitghting one of the key conventions of kōwhaiwhai design.
