Artwork Detail

Ko tā ngā peita ūngeri, muramura, harikoa a Zena Elliot he whakaū tikanga hou ki ngā rārangi whakairo hei hanga i te reo ataata kapakapa, āhuahanga, e rite ana ki ngā peita tūrehurehu a Bridget Riley rāua ko Frank Stella. I roto i a *Current* me *Flow*, o te tau 2017, kōriporipo ai ngā tauira pākati, i ngā tauira haehae kenekene, e ara mai ai i te pūtahitanga kei roto tonu i te porotaka a te mata pikitia; he whakaatu i ngā huringa mutunga kore o te tipuranga, o te taimate, o te tipu anō i ngā kaupeka tau, i ngā marama, i ngā tau. Ko tā *Current* me *Flow* he whakauru i ngā āhuatanga e hāngai ai ki te mahi toi o ngā wā o mua me ērā o nāianei, hei pānga ki te ruingahaetanga o ngā whakaaro, me ngā huarahi huahua ki te whakamahi i te mātauranga Māori i ēnei rā.

Rhythmic, vibrant, and exuberant, Zena Elliot’s paintings reinterpret the lines of whakairo (carving), creating a pulsating geometric visual language inspired by the mid-20th-century abstract paintings of Bridget Riley and Frank Stella. In *Current* and *Flow*, both 2017, the highly saturated pātaki and haehae patterns swirl lyrically around and germinate from a central point within the circular picture plane, conveying the rhythmic, endless life cycles of growth, decay and regeneration across seasons, months and years. Interweaving references to customary and modern art, *Current* and *Flow* refer to the cross-pollination of ideas and ways of articulating mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) in contemporary society.
