Artwork Detail

Whakamahia ai tēnei hātepe tāpiripiri i roto i ngā mihīni tā 3D hei hanga i te kāhui takitoru mō ngā wheku he whakarei o runga he mea i takea ai i ngā momo ahurea marea, inarā ngā kemu ataata me ngā kiriata o ngā tau 1970.

Kereama Taepa’s multi-disciplinary practice interrogates the tradition of innovation within te ao Māori (the Māori worldview). Displayed here are works from the series titled *Whakapī*, 2017, which is a portmanteau of the term ‘whakairo’ (carving) and invokes an additive process like the act of a pī (bee) producing wax to construct the tightly packed hexagonal cells that form a hive. This accumulative process is also used in 3D printing machines to create a triptych of wheku (facial forms) with whakarei (surface patterns) based on popular culture, specifically arcade games and movies from the 1970s.
