The Half Sky: Chinese Women on Silver Screen
Chairman Mao commented that 'Women can hold up half of the sky', however their portrayal in Chinese cinema has changed dramatically from the defeminised, desexualised depictions in 1950s to the liberated women of the post-Cultural Revolution.
Join Dr Xuelin Zhou (Senior Lecturer, School of Film, Television and Media Studies, University of Auckland) for an illustrated lecture on the representation of women in Chinese film.
