Chairman Mao commented that 'Women can hold up half of the sky', however their portrayal in Chinese cinema has changed dramatically from the defeminised, desexualised depictions in 1950s to the liberated women of the post-Cultural Revolution.
Join Dr Xuelin Zhou (Senior Lecturer, School of Film, Television and Media Studies, University of Auckland) for an illustrated lecture on the changing representation of women in Chinese film, drawing on the photographic stills by Yang Fudong that feature in current exhibition Other People Think: Auckland's International Contemporary Collection.
