It’s a big year for the expat artist Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947), an outstanding artist of her generation whose professional life spanned 56 years, and saw her achieve prominence among the avant-garde in England in the 1930s and 1940s, if not at the time in New Zealand. Coinciding with the much-anticipated opening of exhibition, Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys, at Auckland Art Gallery, accompanied by a substantial publication of the same name, edited by library manager Catherine Hammond and curator Mary Kisler, who has also written Finding Frances Hodgkins, a personal account of tracking the artist’s works to Europe and Morocco. She presents a talk on the stellar modernist.
