About the artwork

It was Hayden's interest in formal simplification and pictorial construction in the manner of Cézanne which gradually led him to Cubism, initially through a meeting with Juan Gris. During WWI he spent time with Picasso and other foreign artists continuing to work in Paris. His Cubist paintings, which he produced until 1922, illustrate a sensuous quality of colour, and are mostly based on still-life objects such as bottles, guitars, newspapers and pipes.

Still Life with Guitar, Bottle of Bass and Fruit is currently on display at Auckland Art Gallery as part of the exhibition Game Changers: International Modernism.
