Discover the city through drawing in this relaxed, one-hour outdoor sketching session inspired by Giacometti without End, currently on display in the Gallery. Led by artist and tutor Heyes Johnson, you’ll explore how perception shifts over time through a series of quick studies of the same urban view. Experiment with different mark-making approaches and use drawing as a way of thinking, noticing and responding to place.

All materials are supplied, and the session is open to all abilities – from complete beginners to more experienced artists. Bring your curiosity and discover how drawing can transform an everyday cityscape into a site of creative discovery.

About the tutor:

Heyes Johnson is a visual artist and teacher based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. With over 20 years of experience in tertiary and community education, Heyes has developed a student-centred teaching approach that fosters engaging, supportive, and effective learning environments. He has a Master of Visual Arts from Auckland University of Technology, and his current practice focuses on capturing the fluid, dynamic processes of drawing. Heyes’ drawing classes emphasise the fundamentals of observational drawing while encouraging individual self-expression.
