On Being Chinese – the poetry

Nathan Joe

Nathan Joe (he/him) is a Chinese-Kiwi playwright (2021 Bruce Mason Playwriting Award) and performance poet (2020 National Slam Champion). Most recently, his play Losing Face premiered as part of Q Matchbox 2023. Previous work includes Scenes from a Yellow Peril which had its world premiere at the ASB Waterfront Theatre in 2022 and curating BIPOC spoken word event DIRTY PASSPORTS. He has written for both Theatre Scenes and The Pantograph Punch as a theatre critic. During the day he is an arts administrator and has previously worked as the programming assistant and interim programming manager at Basement Theatre. He is currently the creative director at Auckland Pride.

Zephyr Zhang

Zephyr Zhang (they/them) is a writer and performer based in Tāmaki Makaurau, whose work explores migrant and Queer experiences. Zephyr is both neurodivergent and sleepy. They have performed in the Auckland Theatre Company’s iteration of Scenes from a Yellow Peril, I Am Rachel Chu and OTHER [chinese]. Zephyr's writing has featured in Starling, Sweet Mammalian, Mayhem, Rapture: An Anthology of Performance Poetry from Aotearoa New Zealand (Auckland University Press, 2023), and a range of independent zines.
