event Details
With the stunning new Aotearoa Contemporary exhibition showcasing the latest in contemporary art, we are thrilled to announce another edition of Music of the Month, our free live music programme. On Sunday 21 July from 2pm until 4pm, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki will play host to two of Aotearoa's freshest contemporary folk acts: ; the fabulous Fables, and the talented trio Tweed!
Opening this special double headline show is Fables, a band built around the poignant and transfixing folk hymns of songwriter Jessica Bailey. With a storytelling approach that somehow manages to be at once poignant and ethereal, candid and illustrative, Bailey's songs are rooted in the history of folk music, but embrace a modern indie sensibility that has seen her compared to the likes of Gillian Welch and Cat Power. Fables are currently in the studio recording a new album, and we've heard some sneaky early tunes. Suffice to say, get ready to be heartbroken!
Following Fables will be an appearance from Tāmaki Makaurau's favourite alternative folk trio, Tweed. With a distinctive blend of catchy melodies, polyrhythms, and tight-knit, complex vocal harmonies, Tweed have wowed audiences at folk clubs, festivals, and countless shows across the country for well over a decade. Their vintage sound is reminiscent of classic acts such as Crosby, Stills & Nash and Joni Mitchell, and the trio cite the likes of Ani DiFranco and Joan Armatrading as influences.
We can't wait to get folky with you all at this very special edition of Music of the Month. As always, the event is open to all ages, accessible to all, and completely free to attend.
