This month’s Music of the Month performance is perhaps our most meaningfully intertwined with an exhibition yet, with three Korean New Zealanders joining forces to present a very special improvisational artistic response to South Korean artist Do Ho Suh’s striking work North Wall, 2005. Suh’s large-scale neon green fabric sculpture appears to float in space, suspended from the ceiling in the heart of the Gallery’s building. North Wall is a highly personal work about the meaning of home, capturing the architecture of Suh’s childhood house.
Born in South Korea and raised in Auckland, Jong-Yun ‘J.Y’ Lee is a saxophonist and flautist who performs with everyone from Avantdale Bowling Club to Sir Dave Dobbyn, and is also a pivotal figure in the Tāmaki Makaurau jazz scene.
Originally from South Korea, keyboardist and vocalist Crystal Choi will be familiar to Music of the Month audiences, having appeared as part of the Wāhine in Jazz collective, and fronting her dream-pop band Phoebe Rings, whose critically acclaimed album Aseurai 아스라이 has just been released through American record label Carpark Records.
Tae Kyung Seo is a performance artist who graduated with a BFA from the Korean National University of Arts in 2008. She has presented solo exhibitions in Korea and participated in numerous others internationally. Her work focuses on the unknown, vulnerability as strength, and exploring experimental approaches to painting and performance.
