Members are invited for a before hours exclusive tour of the exhibition The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity

Join Gallery Senior Curator, International Art, Dr Sophie Matthiesson in celebrating the Julian and Josie Robertson Gift of 15 international masterworks by 11 of the most influential figures of European modernism. 

The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity takes you on a dynamic journey through the paths of modernism, exploring movements and themes across the decades. Interlacing the artworks in the Robertson Gift with masterpieces from the Gallery’s permanent collection and important recent gifts and acquisitions, of the best of late-19th- and early-to-mid-20th-century international art. Included are works by artists such as Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso as well as other representatives of Impressionism, Pointillism, Cubism and Surrealism.

This Members-only tour takes place outside of opening hours with a limited capacity of 25 guests. Refreshments will be served in the Members Lounge following the tour.

Sophie Matthiesson Senior Curator International Art

Sophie has more than 20 years’ experience as a curator and educator in England and Australia and previously worked as a lecturer at the University of Leeds and the University of Manchester. Before coming to the Gallery in 2019, she was Curator of International Art at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. As the Gallery’s Senior Curator International Art, Sophie will work to develop and manage the Gallery’s historical and modern international art collection, including the Mackelvie collection.

Sophie’s past curatorial projects include Modern Britain 1900–1960: Masterworks from Australian and New Zealand Collections (2007), Salvador Dalí (2009), Monet’s Garden (2013), Degas: A New Vision (2016) and Van Gogh: The Seasons (2017) at the NGV, and Manpower: Myths of Masculinity (2021) and Threads of Time: Travel, Trade and Textiles (2023) at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
