I tēnei huihuinga koreutu, whakarongo ki ngā waiata, te kai i ngā kai, hokohoko i te mākete, ā, ka aro ngā tamariki ki te mahi poi me ngā toi i whakahihiritia e Matariki. Mātakitakitia te kaitito nekehanga me te kaikanikani a Taane Mete (nō Ngāti Kahungunu me Ngāti Koroki Kahukura) mō tana whakatautau i hangaia mō Matariki Pōhutukawa.

Celebrate Matariki with friends and whānau at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. At this free event, listen to live waiata, eat kai, shop at te mākete, and keep the tamariki busy making poi and craft inspired by Matariki. Join renowned choreographer and dancer Taane Mete (nō Ngāti Kahungunu me Ngāti Koroki Kahukura) for his performance conceived especially for Matariki, Pōhutukawa.

The Hope Gene

Ko te The Hope Gene tētahi tokorua puoro e kaingākau ana ki ngā mahi puoro me te reo Māori. Nō Ngāpuhi me Ngāi Te Rangi a Eugene, ā, he Pākehā a Hope i whānau mai, i tipu hoki i Aotearoa. He maha ā rāua mahi hei kaiwaiata i Aotearoa, nō tata nei i waiata ia i te taha o te wahine whakamīharo a Whirimako Black i te Wellington Jazz Festival, ā, he rawe ki a rāua te tautoko i ngā kaupapa Māori me ō rāua pūmanawa puoro. He tino kaingākau rāua ki te R&B me ngā puoro karakia, he rawe tā rāua takahuri i ngā waiata Māori me ngā waiata arotini ki ngā mea orooro o aua momo waiata.

The Hope Gene is an acoustic duo with a love of music and te reo Māori. Eugene descends from Ngāpuhi and Ngāi Te Rangi, and Hope is Pākehā born and raised in Aotearoa. Both have played with various artists in Aotearoa, most recently with the incredible Whirimako Black at the Wellington Jazz Festival, and they love supporting kaupapa Māori (Māori principles and values) with their musical talents. Passionate lovers of R&B and gospel music, they skilfully transform Māori waiata (songs) and pop songs into acoustic variations of those styles.

Ngā awhweawhe Poi Yeah | Poi Yeah workshops

11am–3pm

He rōpū iti a Poi Yeah o ngā kaihoahoa kaingākau, ngā kaiwaihanga me ngā kaiwhakatautau he rawe ki a rātau te tuari i ō rātau mōhio me ā rātau kōrero o te ao Māori. Ka whakahaerehia e Poi Yeah he awheawhe hanga poi koreutu, pāhekoheko e hāngai ana ki ngā manuhiri o ngā taipakeke katoa. He awheawhe tino ngahau me te hari, ka hangaia e koe tāu ake poi hei whakahoki ki te kāinga me te ako i ētahi kanikani hou! He iti noa te maha o ngā mōkī poi nō reira me moata te tae mai.

Poi Yeah are a small team of enthusiastic designers, makers and performers who enjoy sharing their knowledge and stories of te ao Māori, the Māori worldview. Poi Yeah will lead a free, interactive poi-making workshop aimed at visitors of all ages. Full of colour and fun, in this workshop you will create your own poi to take home and learn some poi dance moves! Poi pack numbers are limited so be sure to come early.

Te Mākete

10am - 5pm

Me whai wāhi ki te hokohoko i tā mātau mākete whakatū noa. E wātea ana ngā tūmomo taonga i hangaia hei hoko mai i a Māori By Design, Tuli Pasifiks, Whenu Ataahua, Totaea me te tautoko i ngā taonga toi me ngā whakairo Māori o te hapori.

Get some retail therapy at our pop-up mākete (market). Shop a wide range of curated hand-crafted items from Māori By Design, Tuli Pasifiks, Whenu Ataahua, Totaea and support local Māori arts and crafts.
