*The drums are loud. We have a small number of ear defenders at the front desk for borrowing, however you might like to bring your own if you are noise sensitive.

Creating knots as a group is a way to bring together people from different walks of life, to exchange good will and blessing. Through the knotting workshops, I want to open up a sense of unitedness in real life – a space of likeness, connectedness, active learning, a kind of commons. During these workshops, I want to share the symbolism of these knots, and think through how these symbols might be used in daily life. They might be considered decorative, but they carry with them lessons for living together. Crocheting, knitting, working with thread in many different ways are love languages passed down from my mother to me. Every stitch is a universal character spoken with care. Immune from misinterpretation, it transcends the spoken word, the limitations of language. My mother found knotting to be the best way of communicating her love for me. Without needing to rely on spoken words, knotting becomes the best love letter.
Kaitiakitanga is represented in the Cassion knot. Whakawhanaungatanga, Kotahitanga, Manaakitanga, Aroha is in the Endless knot and the Button knot. Participants will learn how to make the Cassion knot, the Endless knot and Button knot in the workshop.
Wai Ching Chan 陳煒晴 is a Tāmaki-based contemporary artist. Her practice is often driven by collaborative relationships with other artists, and a desire to build and strengthen connections between people, including between tangata whenua and tauiwi.
Chan was born in Hong Kong and moved to Aotearoa in late 2012. She often works with the symbolic language of Chinese knots 中国结, forming them from a range of fibres, including harakeke and twine, to allude to bonds and connections between people and people and the land.
Knotting workshops are sometimes facilitated by Chan as part of her exhibitions, encouraging conversation among participants and guests, particularly with regard to tauiwi-tangata whenua relationships, while learning to knot.
Bookings are essential, 20 max per session. Open to all ages. Children under 12 will require the assistance of their parent/caregiver. Please book for the child as well as parent/caregiver.
