Join Gallery curators Kenneth Brummel or Sophie Matthiesson in celebrating the Julian and Josie Robertson Gift of 15 international masterworks by 11 of the most influential figures of European modernism. The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity takes you on a dynamic journey through the paths of modernism, exploring movements and themes across the decades. Interlacing the artworks in the Robertson Gift with masterpieces from the Gallery’s permanent collection and important recent gifts and acquisitions, our curator tours will offer a broad survey of the best of late-19th- and early-to-mid-20th-century international art. Included are works by artists such as Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso as well as other representatives of Impressionism, Pointillism, Cubism and Surrealism.

These exclusive private tours take place outside of opening hours with a limited capacity of only 25 guests.

Kenneth Brummel Curator International Art

Kenneth has over fifteen years of experience working at major art museums in Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the United States of America. In 2021–22, he was co-curator with Dr Susan Behrends Frank of The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, of Picasso: Painting the Blue Period, which in 2022 was named a top-10 international exhibition by The Wall Street Journal and the third-best exhibition in the world by The Washington Post. His collaborative research in the emerging field of technical art history has been covered in major magazines and newspapers such as The New York TimesNational GeographicSmithsonian Magazine, and Science. A specialist of 19th- and 20th-century international art, he has mounted exhibitions on a range of modern artists, including Vilhelm Hammershøi, Joan Mitchell and Jean Paul Riopelle, Anthony Caro, and Andy Warhol. Kenneth holds a Masters in Art History from The University of Chicago.

Dr Sophie Matthiesson Senior Curator International Art 

Senior Curator of International Art, Dr Sophie Matthiesson has more than 20 years’ experience as a curator and educator in England and Australia including Curator of International Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2007-2019). In her role at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Sophie develops and manages the Gallery’s historical and modern international collection, including the Mackelvie collection.
