Lunar New Year in Korea is known as Seollal and is celebrated with joyful family gatherings. During this festive time, Koreans participate in charye (ancestral rites), where respect and traditions are honoured. One of the customs is sebaetdon where children bow – sebae – to their elders to receive blessings and money to fill their bokjumeoni, a colourful pouch filled with lucky items, signifying wishes for prosperity in the year ahead.
Dressed in beautiful traditional hanbok, families come together to enjoy special dishes like tteokguk, a delicious rice-cake soup that symbolises a new year, and jeon pancakes that add flavour to the festivities. Alongside feasting, families engage in traditional games like yut nori to invite good fortune and strengthen family bonds. Seollal is a delightful time filled with love, laughter and cherished traditions!
Today at the gallery we are celebrating Seollal with Korean calligraphy and bokjumeoni and jeontong deung workshops.
한국의 음력 새해를 기념하는 설날은 가족들이 모여 함께 즐기는 특별한 명절이다. 전통적으로 한국인들은 설 명절에 조상을 기리는 의식인 차례를 올리게 된다. 새해의 관습 중 하나는 세뱃돈인데 아이들은 집안의 어른들께 세배하고 덕담과 함께 받은 돈을 복주머니에 넣는다.
전통적으로 가족들은 한복을 차려입고 모여 앉아 떡국, 전 등 푸짐한 새해 음식상을 나눈다. 설 음식 외에도 가족들은 윷놀이와 같은 민속놀이를 즐기며 새해의 풍요로움을 기약한다. 설날은 한국의 전통을 되새기는 즐겁고 의미 있는 명절이다.
설날을 맞이하여 오늘 갤러리에서는 한글 서예와 복주머니 만들기, 전통등 만들기 워크숍이 진행된다.

복주머니 Bokjumeoni workshop
복주머니 만들기
Make your own colorful bokjumeoni, a traditional good-luck pouch symbolising blessings, prosperity and protection.
Traditionally bokjumeoni were made of the same material and colours as hanbok, colourful and elegant formal Korean clothing worn for special occasions. Hanbok are beautiful and designed without pockets which led to the creation of bokjumeoni, a drawstring pouch. Today, bokjumeoni are often used as a bag for small presents given to friends and loved ones, and are believed to bring the holder good fortune.
Our bokjumeoni will use material from flags that have flown outside the Gallery to advertise previous exhibitions. This upcycling offers the flags a new and innovative lease on life and you can take home a piece of Gallery history when you make your bokjumeoni.
All materials provided, no experience is necessary, although participants should be comfortable handling a needle and thread.

전통적으로 복주머니는 한국의 전통 의상, 한복의 원단과 색감을 기반으로 제작되었답니다. 한복에는 주머니가 없었으므로 몸에 메거나 달 수 있는 복주머니가 유용하게 쓰였죠. 현대에는 크기가 작은 선물이나 장신구를 넣는 용으로 사용되며 받는 이에게 복을 가져다준다고 전해집니다.
오늘 우리가 만들 복주머니는 갤러리 외부에 설치되었던 전시회 배너를 원단으로 사용합니다. 업사이클로 만든 특별한 복주머니로 갤러리 역사 한 부분을 소장하세요.
모든 재료가 제공되며 경험은 필요하지 않으나 바늘과 실 사용이 가능한 참가자에게 적합한 워크숍입니다.
