event Details

This event is fully booked.

Join artist Chris Heaphy (Ngāi Tahu) and Curator, New Zealand Art Julia Waite for a tour of the exhibition Gordon Walters: New Vision. Enjoy a discussion about how to look at a Walters painting and learn about the friendship Heaphy shared with Walters in the last years of his life.

Heaphy has been making art since the early 1990s and has exhibited throughout Europe, Australia and Asia. His works are held in the collections of Auckland Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery. Heaphy and Walters shared an interest in Māori rock art, and in 1995 they made collaborative paintings for the exhibition Stop Making Sense at the City Gallery Wellington. Later, Heaphy assisted Walters in organising his archive and helped the artist make some of his last paintings. He has a unique insight into Walters’ working methods and deep familiarity with the works.

This is a free tour for Auckland Art Gallery Members and Members’ guests (with valid guest pass). Limited availability, booking required via enewsletter link
