About the film

Kusama – Infinity depicts the life of the now 89 years old Yayoi Kusama, the world’s top-selling female artist who overcame family opposition, sexism, racism and mental illness to bring her radical artistic vision to the world stage. Propelled by a psychological need to make art for her own survival, Yayoi Kusama’s extraordinary career has traversed highs and deep lows. Widely known for her polka dot covered realities and Infinity Mirror Rooms, she also staged public political happenings as well as gate-crashing the Venice Biennale with an uninvited outdoor work.

She is a Member of the International Committee on Museums (ICOM) and the New Zealand representative of the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand. She is the former programme and exhibitions manager at Gus Fisher Gallery, and she studied Japanese language and literature at the University of Canterbury.
