Art Lovers' Film: Loving Vincent

Film and art convey stories. Art Lovers’ Film brings the two together and adds an extra layer of live storytelling, resulting in an entertaining and edifying night out at the cinema.

Art Lovers’ Film is a new event series initiated by Auckland Art Gallery Membership and hosted in conjunction with Rialto Cinemas. Six times a year we’ll present an advance screening of a new film about art, architecture or design, with an introduction by a curator or other expert on the film’s topic. Tickets include a glass of wine and goodie bag.

The first Art Lovers' Film is an advance screening of Loving Vincent, a film about the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh.  

The story unravels the events leading up to van Gogh’s suicide in 1890 in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise in northern France. Every frame of the film is hand painted bringing alive some of van Gogh’s best loved works. Or, in the words of Peter Debruge, Variety, 'Truly awe-inspiring […] pulling audiences into the delirious, hyper-sensual world suggested by van Gogh’s oeuvre'.
