An evening with Charles Darwent

event Details

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki warmly invites you to the exclusive New Zealand appearance of UK art critic and reviewer, Charles Darwent. He will join Auckland Art Gallery Curator, New Zealand art, Julia Waite in a conversation about art, criticism and tricky biographical subjects.

Darwent is a regular contributor to the Guardian, the Art Newspaperand Art Review. He was the Independent on Sunday’s chief art critic from 1999 to 2013 and he presented the Netflix series, Raiders of the Lost Art, from 2014 to 2016.

His publications include Mondrian in London: How British Art Nearly Became Modern and The Drawing Book: A Survey of Drawing. He spent five years researching his most recent publication, a biography of legendary Bahaus artist, Joseph Albers: Life and Work (Thames and Hudson, 2018).

'Josef Albers (1888–1976) was a key figure within the Bauhaus…Charles Darwent has created an engaging portrait, not only of an endearingly difficult, determined man, but also of the artistic climate as it changed according to time and place in the course of Albers’ long life.'
