event Details

McCahon House Artist in Residence Suji Park in conversation with Sue Gardiner, writer/tour guide and co-director of the Chartwell Collection.

About the artist:

Suji Park is a New Zealand-Korean contemporary artist based in Auckland. Park completed an MFA at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland in 2013, has held numerous solo exhibitions, contributed to work to various group shows and art events throughout Australasia.

Park works across a range of media including fired and unfired clay embellished with gold leaf, tempera, garnet, pigment and mica epoxy. She explores both traditional and unconventional methodologies in an autobiographical collision between artist and media. Park skillfully imbues her reconstituted sculptures with new life by accenting subtleties, nuances and interactions between these opposing elements to form new histories and new cultures.

About Sue Gardiner:

As co-director of the Chartwell Collection of Contemporary New Zealand and Australian Art and a trustee of the Chartwell Trust, Sue works with the Auckland Art Gallery where the Collection is on long-term loan and which includes work by Suji. She is a regular columnist and feature writer for Art News New Zealand and other publications.
