This six-week course provides an introduction to the art of observational life drawing. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course will guide you through traditional and contemporary drawing techniques to develop a personal approach to drawing the human figure. You’ll have the opportunity to draw professional life models in a variety of poses with a range of materials and enjoy an expert tour of select artworks in the Gallery’s collection to learn more about how to shape the human form on the page.

About the tutor:
Heyes Johnson is a visual artist and teacher based in Tāmaki Makarau Auckland. With over 20 years working in tertiary and community education, Heyes has developed a student-focused approach to teaching which fosters effective and enjoyable learning environments. Recently, Heyes completed a Master of Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology, where his research explored the extent to which photographs can capture the fluid and dynamic process of drawing. Heyes’ drawing classes are designed to develop the fundamentals of observational drawing practice, while also cultivating an individual’s self-expression.
