M T Woollaston
Edith in a straw hat

Artwork Detail
Woollaston noted in a letter to Edith days before they were married in 1936, 'You were beautiful last night - at moments I longed intensely to be painting you.' He continued to sketch and paint her for the rest of her life.
Understandably, Edith was somewhat shy when Woollaston exhibited these portraits, preferring not to attend an exhibition of his in Dunedin in 1948 for fear of being recognised. (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
