Près du moulin (Near the Windmill)

Alphonse Legros began etching in 1855, and produced over 600 plates. The poet Baudelaire was an important mentor and friend, as was Whistler and Henri Fantin-Latour. Awarded an honourable mention at the Salon of 1860, Legros emerged as a leader of the younger generation of Realists. These evocative landscape etchings were made before he moved permanently to England in the 1860s, where his work earned high praise from the PreRaphaelites. (Impressions of Time and Place, 2002)
