Signature: monogram in centre at foot of plate; 1497 ( the earliest date. on any engraving by Durer) on the hanging ball, above the letters O.G.H.. Watermarks: "Bull's head"; "towers"; "orb with cross".. Early impressions show scratches, which later wear off.. Drawing: it has been alleged that figures in the drawing of a woman's. bath(1496) at Bremen hae been used in this engraving.. The glimpse of a devil in Hell on the left, and the skull and bone lying. on the ground, point clearly to an allegorical and moralizing intention on. the engraver's part.. Verso; (pencil) B.75. CD414. C26818 (l.c.).
