Petrus van der Velden
Artwork Detail
Dutch émigré artist Petrus van der Velden visited the Otira region in 1891 on the first of many such sketching trips. From studies made on site he produced more than twenty extant paintings which reveal the importance of the river and gorge as a motif in his late work. (A Story of New Zealand Waterways, 2002)
