Melvin Day
Waimangu (Japanese Style)
Artwork Detail
'Waimangu (Japanese Style)', 1950, reflects Melvin Day's interests in Asian art and the work of D.T. Suzuki, who wrote a number of authoratitive texts on Zen philosophy. A serence and cotemplative mood is evoked as Day strips the landscape of superfluous detail, and limits his palette to subtle colours. The fine black lines and areas of white echo the techniques in historic Japanese paintings and the work artists such as Kangaku Shinso (Soami).
