Nouvelle-Guinée: Costume des Chefs Papous du hâvre Dorey; Costume des Papous du hâvre Dorey

Artwork Detail
Louis Auguste de Sainson spent almost three years aboard the French naval vessel Astrolabe as it made a circumnavigation of the globe under the command of Captain Jules Dumont d’Urville. De Sainson made a large number of drawings of people, scenes and objects encountered during that voyage, with a great many recording the islands of the South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia. Many of de Sainson’s drawings were later translated into reproductive prints which were then published in 1833.
