Paul Gauguin
Artwork Detail
The artist Paul Gauguin, was a painter, printmaker, sculptor and ceramicist. This work was painted in Rouen, early in Gauguin’s career, when he was struggling to survive as an artist supporting a young family. This painting is impressionist in style, and like Cézanne’s early work, shows the influence of his friend Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). This is an important work for Auckland. On his second voyage to Tahiti in 1895, Gauguin visited the city’s gallery and museum. He wrote in the Gallery’s visitors’ book and made a number of sketches of Maori artefacts, reflecting his interest in Pacific art forms. The Auckland Art Gallery has two works on paper by Gauguin.
