Artwork Detail

One of the chiefs with whom d'Urville established good relations was Palou. On 9 May 1827 the Captain and his officers paid a ceremonial visit to the chief. No one of note was waiting to meet them as it transpired that one of Palou's children had just died and another was gravely ill. A "spirit seance" was held for the child, which they observed. The ship's doctors examined the child, who had a very high fever, and were only able to suggest frequent baths as a treatment.
