Layla Rudneva-Mackay
Yellow Curtain

Artwork Detail
At first glance, Layla Rudneva-Mackay’s photographs seem explicit – stones and velvet – but their hidden information exercises your curiosity. The fabric hides a body just visible around its edges. This almost-concealed body is sandwiched between the velvet curtain and gravel hills by the narrow depth
of field of the camera’s lens. The artist says her photographs construct incidents, catching moments between bodies and landscapes. This sense of theatre works on an intimate scale connecting the viewer and an absent subject. The latent drama
is rendered static through the photographic process, creating a minimal yet vivid outcome.
