Veduta degli avanzi del Foro Nerva. View of the ruins of the Forum of Nerva by Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Artwork Detail

The Convent of the Annunciate Virgin was constructed within the walls of the Forum of Nerva, one of whose principal entranceways, the Arch of the Pantani, can be seen at the far left. By the 18th century other entrances were partly hidden by the detritus of passing time which had raised the ground level. Piranesi has distorted the wall to show the full length of Via Tor de' Conti, as if viewed through a wide-angle lens.
