These tombs of two mediaeval bishops of London were
lost when old St Paul’s Cathedral was destroyed in 1666.
At that moment, William Dugdale’s book with Hollar’s
prints became the key record of the ancient building.
Proposing another illustrated book, the writer John
Aubrey pointed to the inevitable fate of England’s
monuments: ‘ruined by time or fire, as we have seen
[with] that stupendous fabric of [St] Paul’s Church, not
a stone left on stone, and [which] lives now only in
Mr Hollar’s Etchings . . .’
