Wenceslaus Hollar
West End of St George's Chapel, Windsor

Artwork Detail
Beginning around 1660, Hollar etched almost 60
plates for Elias Ashmole’s 1672 history of the Order
of the Garter. Hollar visited Windsor Castle where he
made drawings of St George’s Chapel and the related
monuments. His views of the interior are considered
some of his finest work.
More than 350 years later, in April 2008, a service of
thanksgiving was held in the chapel to commemorate
the life of Sir Edmund Hillary who was made a knight of
the Order of the Garter in 1995.
