The Scorning of Christ (Christ Mocked)

Artwork Detail
Crespi was known for his feathery brushwork, and put the technique to good effect making skillful copies of Venetian painters who had gone before him. This work, in a monochromatic palette, is representative of much of his oeuvre. He began to focus on religious themes from the 1730s, in particular the sufferings of Christ and the saints. A large-scale painting on the theme of the Mocking of Christ can be found in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna.
