Biography
Born in Whakatū/Nelson, Gary Whiting has followed in the footsteps of his father, Cliff Whiting, and his involvement with art and in Māori art communities.

As a part of his studies toward a diploma of teaching, Whiting assisted the decoration of *Te Kupenga o te Mātauranga* in 1979, on the Hokowhitu campus of Palmerston North College of Education (now Massey University). He went on to achieve a Bachelor of Education in 2007. In 2015, Whiting graduated from Massey University with a Masters of Māori Visual Arts (Distinction).

Specialising in photography and film with a fascination in new computer technologies, whakapapa is an intrinsic part of Whiting’s practice. He focuses on the relationships between the whenua and contemporary whānau life, drawing on the intrinsic value of creation narratives throughout.
