Ignacio Gumucio: Everybody knows that our cities were built to be destroyed

Article Detail

Travelling from Santiago towards the west I ended up a day ahead from home. With an extra day and the clock still on Chilean time, I spent my four days in Auckland noticing the passage of time, painting against the clock, not in a rush, but aware of the minutes, hours and days. I made three paintings. The ephemeral murals that I made summon an elastic time of reclusion – a characteristic of painting – hours where the most decisive moments happen and that are indistinguishable from moments where not much happens. During these days of jetlag, modes and speeds of disparity appear just as in the paintings I make in my studio. The wall I painted in Auckland Art Gallery is what I would call an area of negotiation between dissimilar ideas, where I tried for many paintings to coexist in a single place. As in any negotiation, it ends with an abdication of pure and definitive ideas only to achieve disappointing and momentary arrangements. And so, I bend the lines, shapes, colors and stories until they hold each other together in place. I believe this is also the way our cities our built, to only then be destroyed.
