We lend artworks from our collection to other galleries and museums, both in New Zealand and overseas. This service connects us to related cultural institutions, and means that our works are seen in diverse places by many different people. If you work for a gallery or museum and are interested in borrowing an artwork from our collection, download the Gallery’s loan policy here.
Temporary Closure of Outward Loans Service
During 2021, the Gallery entered a Loans Moratorium while we undertook a collection move to a new offsite art storage facility. We have encountered extensive challenges in making the new store operational, compounded by supply and service delays due to the pandemic. This has resulted in a significant portion of the collection being inaccessible, beyond our forecasting.
Beginning in June 2022, the Gallery will undertake a major heritage restoration project on the historical part of the building replacing components which are 134 years old resulting in a significant impact on our ability to service outward loans.
The new store and the heritage projects are significant infrastructure projects which will make the collection more accessible in the long term. It is our desire to recommence our lending programme as soon as we are able.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we seek to improve collection access and preserve our heritage building.
For these reasons the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki will be entering a Loans Moratorium until March 2023.
For further information on this moratorium, please email Julie Koke, Senior Registrar.
