The total cost of the redevelopment project was $121 million. Of this, the former Auckland City Council committed $56.1 million. The balance came from a central government commitment of $30 million (plus an additional $1.5 million in interest on this sum), and from the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation who raised the remainder.

In 2006, Jennifer Gill, Chief Executive, ASB Community Trust, announced support for the Gallery development project with a grant totalling $6.5 million. The ASB Community Trust were the most prominent non-council, non-government funder towards the project.

We established the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation, a charitable trust whose principal aim was to raise the additional capital required. The Foundation worked with individuals, trusts and the corporate sector to encourage support for the development, and also organised major fundraising events and activities to support the project.
